Some trout are remembered by their size.

Others by the river or lake they came from.

The rainbows that inspired this design are remembered by their color.

They came from the cold, glacial-fed waters of Duck Lake near Browning, Montana. In those waters, the colors are never quite what a camera records. Young fish flash silver along their sides. Mature rainbows can develop a subtle copper cast. And the famous rainbow stripe, filtered through cold glacial water, appears more rose-pink than red.

Reflections of Duck Lake was created from those memories.

This isn't intended to be a scientific illustration of a rainbow trout. It's an artistic interpretation of what an angler remembers: the dark olive back, the soft rose lateral band, silver flanks fading toward a clean white belly, and the black spotting of a living fish seen through moving water.

The Artwork

The coloration moves from a darker olive back into a softer rose-pink lateral band, then through spotted silver before fading into the bright belly coloration below.

The design isn't meant to reproduce one particular fish.

It represents something harder to photograph: the colors remembered after years of watching Montana rainbows move beneath cold, clear water.
