Stillwater Ember™

Some of the best fishing water doesn't look like much water at all.

This pattern began with a late-fall walk up the Stillwater River country north of Whitefish, Montana. Following a feeder creek barely five feet across and only inches deep turned into an afternoon of pulling pan-sized Brook Trout from water most people would have walked past.

The fish were spectacular.

Dark olive backs carried the wandering vermiculations that make a Brook Trout instantly recognizable. Yellow and cream spots scattered across their flanks, broken by those jewel-like red spots surrounded in blue. Beneath them, the fish burned into brilliant orange—and along the lower fins were the unmistakable layers of black and brilliant white.

The colors seemed to belong to the country around them. Golden tamaracks. Yellow aspens. Rust and orange brush. Dark evergreens. Cold, clear mountain water.

Stillwater Ember™ was created from the memory of that day.

Wear the Fish, Not a Picture of One

The Colors of Montana Waters™ Collection approaches fishing apparel differently.

Instead of placing a picture of a trout on a hoodie, the coloration of the fish becomes the garment itself.

The Stillwater Ember™ pattern begins with the Brook Trout's dark olive and gold vermiculated back. It transitions through slate-olive flanks scattered with yellow and cream spots and the species' distinctive blue-haloed red markings before warming into the rich gold and fiery orange of a mature Montana Brook Trout.

The result isn't intended to reproduce one particular fish.

It's an interpretation of what an angler remembers after releasing one back into cold Montana water.
